Too many comedies get bogged down with 20-30 minute chunks of drama in the middle or end and forget to even attempt to be funny (e.g. It keeps the comedy flowing at an almost constant rate throughout the film. The last movie I saw pull this off so well was Seth Macfarlane's Ted. are referenced, yet it keeps each call-back to a maximum of two or three repetitions. It does have plenty of call-back gags, where a character/joke/previous incident/etc. However, it doesn't just devolve into a series of completely random bits. It never has that "overly long SNL sketch" feel, where the only joke is the premise repeated over and over. It does not pound one joke into the ground. The flick just has so much going for it (I'll spare comparison to the TV series since it was obvious it only used it for the premise and nothing else): But 21 Jump Street made me consistently produce uncontrollable, audible laughter throughout the entire film. If anything, I crack a smile and exhale quickly through my nose at parts (e.g. I had heard that it's "dumb, but funny", which is a recommendation I often hear for films that are amusing, but don't make me laugh. I know I'm a bit late to the party, but the new trailer that just came out for 22 Jump Street got me thinking that I had never seen the first one. ![]()
